Sales Tips From a Self-Confessed Introvert

The highlight for me at the recent Problogger event was hearing from Chris Guillebeau.   He probably doesn’t see himself as a sales mentor.  Many of his wise words were so applicable to how to sell that I thought I would convert them to sales tips for my blog.

  • Chris says “Know your customers, engage with them”

All businesses need customers. The only way to truly understand what they want and why they choose you and re-choose you is to go and ask them. Go and engage and learn more about your clients.I am sure you will be surprised by how much you learn about your business.

  • Chris says “Be precise about what value you provide”

I call this getting ‘crunchy’.Be brutal with yourself and answer the questions why should people really care about what you are doing in your business.Find out precisely what it is that people get from using your product or service, and when you think you have it – keep digging.

  • Chris says “Focus on getting things right with your existing customers”

Your existing customers are a great place to start when you are learning how to sell. They have already bought from you – go and find out why and what else you might be able to help them with.

  • Chris says “Be who you are – introvert or extrovert”

You are your best sales tool – yes even if you are shy and introverted. The best sales people I know are honest, truthful and always themselves.Yes you have to go out and talk to people, but go and do your way.

  • Chris says “Don’t fear success … ask for what you want”

Here is the single biggest mistake I see non-sales people make. They don’t ask for what they want. For every meeting, phone call or interaction with your client, have an idea about what you want to get from it …. and don’t forget to ask for what you want. They can’t say yes if you don’t ask them to buy.

These weren't the only gems from Chris ... but they were the ones that resonated with me.
